Algarve Cycling . . .

Cycling is enjoyed by all, whether you are interested in the sport of road racing or mountain bike trails or just the sheer pleasure of cycling. The Algarve is a place where you can experience all this.

The local cycling clubs, based in the major towns of the Algarve, organise road races and mountain biking races called (BTT) on a regular schedule. The events are usually well advertised and the major road races can have the appearance of a mini "Tour de France". In fact the Tour da Algarve is run over several days from east to west of the Algarve and attracts all the razzmatazz of the media with motorcyclists and national TV crews covering the event. The BTT races are usually held on the outskirts of towns such as Loulé and spectators can always find a good viewing point along the circuit.

February ecah year sees the RDP Trophy and "Around the Algarve" cycling events, both of which form part of the international cycling events calendar.

If you prefer to amble along at your own pace, there are specialist touring organisations who can supply all the equipment you require, together with guided tours or suggested route maps. Some of these tours can be arranged to take several days with organised comfortable overnight stays in villages and small hamlets, where you are able to sample the lifestyle of the local people. Many hours can be spent cycling through wooded lanes lined with chestnut, cork, pine and acacia trees. This combined with a picnic by a river in spectacular countryside is an experience to be remembered. For those wishing to bring their own cycles with them, we would stress that good bright reflective clothing is highly recommended as some of the smaller main roads can carry heavy volumes of traffic.
